RYA VHF/DSC Radio

A one day course providing practical training on VHF/DSC and the theoretical background to GMDSS.

This course provides the necessary training to meet the requirements for the Radio Telecommunication Agency Short-Range Certificate. This qualification has superseded the VHF licence and is required by all owners of a VHF radio or DSC controller.

The course is taught using training radios that behave in exactly the same way as the radio on your own boat, and practice is provided in the correct use of both DSC and voice communications. Whenever possible we incorporate a visit to Portland Coastguards operations room as part of the course.

A session on emergency beacons such as EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon) and SART(search and rescue radar transponder) is included to provide an insight into long range distress alerting equipment.

The course culminates in a short practical test together with a theoretical examination. Successful candidates may apply for the Radio Communication Agencies Short-Range Certificate.

What our clients said:

"I have recently completed a VHF radio course at Quality Time Training, Portland, Dorset.

Myself and three other friends discussed later how much we had enjoyed the course. The classroom was clean and tidy and certainly a friendly welcoming environment to be in.

The instruction was delivered in a pleasant and friendly manner and the lectures were informative and easily understood. The instructor Bob Elliott still made time for any student who had difficulties, from the start, everyone was made very welcome and put at ease."

"The visit to the Coastguard was a good experience also and it certainly gave everyone a good understanding of how the system works from the other side"
