Yachtmaster Coastal Practical
The more ambitious motor cruising skipper can improve his or her skills on a Coastal Skipper course.
This course provides tuition in the skills and techniques required to skipper a motor cruiser, of at least 7m in length, safely on coastal and offshore passages, by day and night. The course consists of skippered passages in a whole variety of situations, on tidal waters, and includes tuition regarding safety, passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling and emergency situations.
The course culminates in a one-day practical examination by an independent examiner appointed by the RYA.
Successful candidates will be issued with the RYA Coastal Skipper Certificate.
The Yachtmaster Coastal qualification may be commercially endorsed by the RYA for the operation of commercial craft up to Catagory 3 of the MCA code of practice. This entitles the holder to skipper commercial vessels operating up to 20 miles from a safe haven.
