A little history of Portland Harbour - in 1794 the idea emerged that it would be a good to construct a harbour at Portland as a safe refuge for shipping. However, it wasn’t until 1844 that the idea became reality and the project got underway. In July 1849 Prince Albert dropped the foundation stone – within the stone is a bottle containing coins and this is covered with an inscribed plaque. You never know you may see it next time you’re diving off the Inner Breakwater arm. The breakwater is 30 metres high, 90 metres thick at the base and took 23 years to build. The harbour covers 6745 acres.
